Torvill and Dean – Barnum

Here is a very high quality version of Barnum from the 1983 World Championships. It is taken from the ‘Path to Perfection’ documentary about T&D..(excellent look at their amateur career) Broadway star Michael Crawford helped them put this together– he is exhuberant in the kiss and cry..’They’ve done it!’ Stay tuned at the end there is a little interview with Michael Crawford– he was very cute back then!

    @sakuramari
    he was in a show called Barnum and that’s why he got involved in this! (A circus theme) It was the early 80’s, this was 1983, some mothers was late 70s

    Oh wow. I didn’t realise that. Thank you for telling me. I thought I was mistaken when I first saw him. This must have been around the time of “some mother’s do ‘ave ‘em”, Before he did “Phantom of the Opera”.
    Torvill & Dean are truely amazing.

    That is Michael Crawford! He worked with them on the program. He is priceless in the kiss and cry–he gets more excited than Jayne and Chris put together!

    Torvill & Dean are geniuses.
    The guy talking at the end, 2nd from last reminds me of Michael Crawford.

    I like Bestemianova and Bukin. Somehow I think Klimova & Ponomarenko were good too. However, they were just some great ice dancers. Only T&D are the legend! Even after 30 years, T&D’s routines are just as fresh as it could be. I would never get tired of watching their programs.

    Thanks so much for sharing this. I too was in the audience for this momentous performance. They were absolutely magical. Mesmerizing and delightful. I do recall, however, that in those white costumes were really hard to see! lol Wonderful memories. Thanks again!

    I was there for this performance, and watching it always brings back the thrill of that time. Viewers may want to check my link to a practice session which shows the preformance from the judges viewpoint – at Helsinki the TV cameras were on the other side of the rink and didn’t get the best angle.

    Wonderful musicality!

    I am the same age and not particularly cynical and they make me cry too, it is the sheer artistry and beauty of their dancing. Also the comic bits they put in. I have had a happy evening on youtube watching these two and there was a fabulous dance which I do not recall seeing before. Jane and Chris doing an egyptian stile dance in orange costumes. My jaw must have been open the whole time in sheer disbelief. A fabulous routine. Don’t forget Barber and Slater doing their Chaplin routine!

    I’m nearly 60 and as cynical as hell…yet they ALWAYS make me cry…because they’re ordinary folk who had something special, worked like f**k and made the top…and guess what? For all the fame, TV attention and all the rest, they’re still nice ordinary folk…
