Arguing about who’s the best player ever is like arguing about the best movie ever. There’s no definitive answer. He CERTAINLY is one of the best ever. As for idster7’s comment, even Michael Jordan acknowledges that David was his idol. Jordan was nowhere near the player in college that Thompson was, not until he developed in the pros. Even Tar Heel fans that saw Thompson play will acknowledge that. And don’t even lump Kobe in the same category. Thompson would school him all day long.

    Yes, bballbazzi.
He went to the NBA. Actually the ABA, which them merged with the NBA.
At the time, he was the highest paid player in history.

@glballr22 you cannot say he would’ve been greater than michael jordan because even without the drugs, he would’ve needed michael jordan’s work ethic to be better than michael jordan.

did he go to the NBA

  5. on 11 May 2010 at 7:32 am gstlnrd

well it wasn’t to be…unfortunately. MJ is still the GOAT!

dont forget that he couldnt play his freshman year since that was against the rules at this time, so he won two mvp awards in only three years of playing in the NCAA.

    What are you saying?

    48 inch vertical*

  12. on 11 May 2010 at 10:58 am rustyheel23

He plays on my AAU team. He’s alright. Can get up pretty high, but he’s not great at dunking. He’s tried to dunk twice in our games and has gotten blocked both times. He can rebound like a machine though.

The guy is definitely the greatest college basketball player of all time, and would’ve been the greatest basketball player ever instead of MJ if he hadn’t ruined his career. I mean really a 44 inch vertical leap??? and it was on 44 inches because that was the highest the scale could go. Crazy.

Man what a sad story, this guy was a phenomenal athlete with a superb outside shot, he had 1st ballot Hall of Famer written all over him until …

Duke was put on probation the same year for violating rules during the recruitment of David Thompson as well.

It’s a shame that NC State was ineligible for tournament play in ‘73. When Thompson was being recruited, he played in a pickup game with assistant coach Eddie Biedenbach on his visit. Seems pretty harsh if you ask me.

jordan modeled his game on him

David Thompson was one of the best college players to play the game. People remember him for his amazing leaping ability, but he really was an all-around star.

It’s hard to believe that this used to be State basketball compared to the sh– we have now…

Man, Kobe is a beast, BUT DT was an outright FREAK.

If DT didn’t let the money go to his head, he very could be the GOAT. Look at his college numbers, Jordan and Bias could NOT touch him.

David Thompson’s son is on my team now. his name is chris and he dunked in our last game lol. if your wonderin, we play for the Graystone knights (high school)

  22. on 11 May 2010 at 6:04 pm ShowtimeYal

He was just amazing. He had a complete game and could flat out fly.

  23. on 11 May 2010 at 6:15 pm packfanstk

Bet he did. DT could pick change up off the top of the backboard. Phil Spence was 6′9″ and in the 74 East Regional finals DT, leaping past Spence to block a shot, literally caught his TOE on Spence’s SHOULDER, flipping over and hitting his head on the floor. The only player to single-handedly raise the college basketball performance bar as dramatically as DT was Alcindor. I’ve never met anyone that actually saw David Thompson play that thinks there was a better college player.

BooteyMasta I appreciate your respect for David but overall I believe Kobe Bryant is a much better basketball player.

  25. on 11 May 2010 at 7:37 pm mljordan123

yes he did, saw a tape of him grabbing a quarter off of the backboard
